Health and Safety

Teachers should implement health and safety awareness to students at a very young age so they can apply it to their daily lives. Health and safety lessons should be applied in the classroom to raise awareness on possible dangers they are likely to encounter in and outside of school. Health and Safety is very important because it merges into employment, post-secondary education, vocational/training, and independent living. Below are links that are useful for teachers to show or inform students about in the classroom.

CDC

The link above is a great website that teachers can use to share with students on emergency preparedness. Emergencies and disasters can arise at any time and without notice teachers can inform students on what they can do to alleviate travesties that can happen such as fires, floods and acts of terrorism. The site provides information on how to prepare and develop plans, use assistive technologies, and understanding your rights.

Video

The link above is a video that teachers can share with their students about safety in the workplace. Being informed of safety precautions in the workplace can avoid preventable accidents from happening and harming students. It is vital that individuals with disabilities receive training or information on safety measures that can be applied when they begin to work.

Dallas Police

The link above is the Dallas police website that can be used to inform students with disabilities information on crime maps, sex offender awareness, daily crime reports and more. The information on the website can help teachers inform students so that they can decide the best location to live if they are planning to live on their own. Furthermore, teachers can use the information and create a lesson on safety procedures that can be taken if a situation might occur.

  1. What a great website on being prepared for emergencies. We loved how the website branches out to other areas such as tips for first responders, family evacuation, and being prepared on the job. As a future educator this website would definitely be beneficial to bookmark and become knowledgeable about so that we can be prepared to help our students in the event of an emergency. We also liked the fact that there was a free information link that has a book on being prepared for emergencies. We feel this would be a great book to have in our files. We also liked the video and how it covers multiple areas of safety tips at the workplace. This would definitely be a great video to show our students as they prepare for employment. We like how you included the Dallas Police Department as a resource for teachers. After looking at the website we realized that it has tips for cyber bullying, how to report emergencies, and as you stated, sex offender registry. We feel these websites will help us prepare our students to be safe as they prepare to live independently in the community. Thanks for the wonderful websites and ideas!!

  2. I really like the fact that yall linked Health and Safety to the other areas, such as independent living and employment, because I think this is a very important factor to realize. I also loved the recognition of Health and Safety needing to be acknowledged in school at a young age. Great introduction! My personal favorite, as far as the links are concerned, was the video. This is an excellent resource for teachers, because being a cartoon the video will definetely attract the attention of it's viewers. Yall did a very good job of providing very different resources, and not providing the same three aspects on three different sites. One of your sites is informational, one is a video, and one is a place that offers links and resources for individuals. By doing this the teacher has at her finger tips multiple opportunities to teach her students with disabilities all the aspects of Health and Safety that they should know!
